Walk like an Egyptian

Le persone che camminano su un ferryboat cercando di mantenere l'equilibrio possono richiamare alla mente l'immagine degli antichi Egiziani: camminano di lato. Questo ha ispirato a Liam Stenberg una canzone, "Walk like an Egyptian", incisa dalle Bangles nell'album "Different light" e portata al successo insieme a "Manic Monday" nel 1986.

"Tutti quegli antichi dipinti nelle tombe, fanno la danza della sabbia, non lo sai?" inizia così il brano, che gioca sulla credenza popolare che gli Egizi camminassero di profilo.
Era destinato a Toni Basil, che vi rinunciò, lasciando via libera alle Bangles: il loro produttore David Kahne ebbe la trovata di far cantare ognuna delle tre strofe a una diversa componente della band: Susanna Hoffs, Vicki Peterson e Michael Steele.

In classifica "Walk like an Egyptian" raggiunse il primo posto, mantenuto per quattro settimane, negli Stati Uniti e il terzo in Gran Bretagna. Le Bangles furono la prima band completamente femminile (intendendole anche come strumentiste) a raggiungere il numero 1 in America.
